Author's Note

After the completion of this novel, I was driving home from Knoxville, Tennessee, when my daughter phoned to tell me that she was watching CNN Breaking News.  I drove to the nearest truck stop to find a television.  The report said Fidel Castro had undergone emergency surgery and had handed over temporary power of Cuba to his brother, Raul.  I was stunned.  It was as if I were watching my main character's fondest hope beginning to unfold in reality.

I wished for Castro's healthy recovery.  Soon after the broadcast, I returned to Cuba to visit old friends.  There were no apparent signs of chaos or political unrest due to Fidel’s failing health.  The Cuban people as a whole were concerned for their leader and expressed genuine sadness for his illness.  This was a very different attitude from the Cubans here in the United States, who long for Fidel to pass on.

Cuba has not changed much; nothing ever sems to change much in this country.  My friends and acquaintances continue to live under depressed economic conditions and to deal with the day-to-day hardships of life under Communism and this unusual dictatorship.  They still wheel and deal in the black market.  They still live in crumbling homes.  They still smile and love Cuban music and gatherings.  Nothing ever seems to change much in Cuba.  Despite many problems, the people remain peaceful and friendly.  They still have nothing but time on this tropical island.  Cuba will always remain a beautiful and soulful place where the people are the true treasure.  Cuba is a fascinating dream world that will always hold a special place in my heart.
